Hawai'i (Big Island)
The home of the volcano Goddess Pele, the Island of Hawai'i is also
known as the Big Island-- thought not the most populated, it's
physically bigger than all the others combined. The Big Island retains a
rural flavor, and many residents are grateful to be removed from the
urban bustle. There's a peaceful atmosphere, with a depth of tradition
it is possible to enjoy with a knowledgeable guide.
The topography runs to extremes, including desolate, lava-covered areas,
lava flow at the active volcano and the most lush and spectacular
Tropical Rain Forests. The big Island also boasts Mauna Kea-- the
world's tallest mountain, if you count the portion below the sea: four
huge cattle and horse ranches (Parker's is the largest privately owned
ranch in the U.S.); and more gorgeous flowers than you can imagine--
most of the orchids for the mainland are grown here.
The world's most active volcano, Kilauea, has been erupting steadily for
the past 10 years. (It is safe to watch the flowing lava, but the best
viewing sites change daily and Faith can direct you to those who can
take you closer than the ordinary tourist can go).
You'll also find colorful beaches-- golden, green (olivine), gray, black
and white-- and even a beach that disappears (it's between Keauhou and
Kona and is claimed temporarily by the tide).
Mauna Kea--At a breathtaking 14,000 ft (with an azure sea sparkling
below), Mauna Kea is also one of the most exotic place on Earth to Snow
Ski (January-March). One of the best spots to explore the heavens: The
Mauna Kea Observatory has eight major astronomical telescopes. It's
possible to visit them but reservations must be made in advance: phone
808-935-3371. People with histories of health problems, pregnant women
and children under the age 16 are not allowed to go to the summit
because of the extreme atmospheric conditions. Those who go should keep
in mind there are no supplies, such as food or gas, at the summit. It is
very cold so bring something warm.
